I found my motivation

Goodbye Christmas Holidays.... you will be missed.

I Think I Found My Motivation

I weighed in this morning at 159.2. Patrick Bateman I think I found my motivation to get back on a healthy diet and exercise schedule.
I KNOW.  I’m excited too!
I had lost it for awhile.  Took a break.  Got a little lazy.
And for me, when I’m not working out regularly, I get all down and blah.
sad gif  The hardest thing for me to do is start back up after a hiatus.  I don’t know why- but it is SO difficult to get back on a schedule after I fall off.
Now my diet has been good.  Not great, but during the week, I’m pretty clean and on the weekends I’ve been falling off.  Plus May was Mega Birthday month in our household so there have been lots of cupcakes and chocolate consumed.
But I’ve made the decision to zip it up and get back to a healthier and cleaner diet- and it’s actually been going pretty great.  Even the kids are eating what I eat.
Last night I made grilled chicken, garlic cous cous, and steamed broccoli and carrots for dinner.  And the shocker out of this is that my sassypants five year old McDonald’s fiend gobbled it up like I had just presented her with a plate of salty golden french fries.  And then she told me that the dinner I made her was “delectable”.  <—her Fancy Nancy books are teaching her fancy words.
I’m so proud.
I’m shooting to get in at least three good workouts.  Running is a must, because I love it and it’s my therapy.  But I also love weights- so I’m recreating a routine from Jillian Michael’s No More Trouble Zones and incorporating cardio by using a jump rope.  This is something I can do inside, and it’s pretty simple and highly effective.
I’m discovering that jumping rope is a FANTASTIC way to increase my cardio and burn some major calories.  PLUS it is low impact so I’m not peeing myself everytime I take a hop.
Yes, friends, I’ve had two children, I still struggle with pee.  It’s my badge of motherhood.  I own it.
Any sort of extreme jumping around is not suitable for my condition.
But jumping rope uses legs, arms, and core, and I’m only hopping like an inch and a half off the ground so no worries there!  And it’s difficult.  I try to jump 100 times, take a break, jump 100, break, and so on.  If I make it to 500 jumps, I consider it a success.
My goal is to make it 30 minutes.  Way harder than it sounds.
I’ve calculated that jumping moderately for 20 minutes burns about 300 calories.  NOT BAD.
So this week, my diet is in check and I feel great.  I’ll make time to fit at least 3 workouts in.  And check back with a weight update on Monday!

I think I finally found my motivation to get back on a healthy diet and exercise schedule... I KNOW! I'm excited too! I lost interest for a while... took a break.... then just went all crazy and took full advantage of using Christmas as an excuse to eat pretty terrible without any repercussions for about a month. I didn't go completely off the deep end and scarf down buckets of ice cream for dinner or anything, but I didn't blink an eye when I ordered a delicious plate of cheeeeeeese enchiladas, and I never passed up an offer for a second fourth cookie either.

Lets get real here... I'm 29 years old and have been on a diet... um like what? most of my life? yeah... I know a cookie isn't 'healthy' for me the way a nice plate of veggies is. I usually pick lean protein over not and I could count carbs till the cows come home (side note: we don't have cows... so thats, like, forever) I also am a pretty good nutritionist. I know that combinations of food matter. yadda yadda.....

I like the idea of 'clean eating' and just 'making it a lifestyle' but darnit!... I need structure! I can't do wishy-washy. I need rules and guidelines and the promise of if you do A + B you get C. While the 'lifestyle' is good in theory, I need something I can cling to. My weight loss journey isn't just a few pounds here and there.... its a long term ride and I need a plan.

For the past month I've been searching for something that isn't going to have me so miserable that I'm yelling at my kids and family on day 4, won't have me so restricted that I burn out within a few weeks, won't have me in the kitchen for 5 hours a day AND.... is healthy REAL food. I don't do stuff out of a box or a bag and has a shelf life on this earth longer than I do. (no one should)

So, I've decided to follow a low-glycemic diet. *newsflash* I'm a diabetic. This seriously should have occurred to me long ago. duh. Help with blood sugars and possibly weight loss too? Perfect. I'm in.

This is what a typical meal looks like. Half of your meal is veggies, maybe some fruits. The other half is divided between lean proteins and good carbs (ones that are less processed, mostly whole grains) Fiber is a big deal here. It helps your gut process carbs more slowly not allowing for the blood sugar spike and falls. and as with any meal plan... water water water.

With water, its recommended that you drink 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water per day. So if you weight 200 pounds, you need 100 oz of water/day. You get the idea. Lets just say, in order for me to get the ounces of water/day I need.... I spend half my day drinking water, the other half I spend peeing..... oh, was that TMI (too much information)?  Sorry, it's the truth though.

So over the next week I'm going to begin gathering some menu plans and try my best to make sure 75% of what I eat is low glycemic approved. Then go full force after next week when I go to the grocery store again. I will get an official weigh in number and track my blood sugars more regularly to see what degree of progress I can achieve. (I told you I need guidelines to be able to judge my success, didn't I?... welcome to OCD/crazy town. get comfortable here. but not too comfortable.)

Now I do need to work up to adding in exercise more frequently. Its really sporadic and random right now... Its more of a guilty work out. Like when I'm feeling pretty terrible that I drank a real (non diet) root beer instead of sticking to my 'drink water till you die' rule. <--- Thats the nickname that I've given my water obsession. I still have an occasional non water drink, but I do better when I stick to water.

So... looking forward to getting started and working on my health moving in a positive direction. <3
