I made the decision on my own to start seeing a new endocrinology doctor. My old doctor wasn't bad. I really liked her and her staff. I felt comfortable and taken care of there. But when I thought about it... nothing was ever going to change by staying with her. In her eyes, my health was managed well. And i do do well and take care of myself. My blood sugars and blood pressure are kept normal by a balance of several medications.... 5 medications to be exact. Its not terrible. I've certainly been worse. (With Cushing's disease i was taking 15 pills/3times a day) but its not what I want to be doing for the rest of my life.
My question to the new endocrinology doctor was this... "I feel like and I strongly believe that if I can get rid of the extra weight I carry around... I can get rid of the medical conditions I carry around with it too. Can you help me?"... weight loss for me is complicated. The weight was put on because my pituitary gland was pouring out steroids into my body that were off the charts. (All those steroids and I still can't hit a baseball... pisses me off...) so weight gain lead to the health issues. Diabetes, high BP. Health issues lead to medication. The solution is to lose weight but said medication makes your body resistant to weight loss... Seriously? Do you see the hamster wheel I'm running in? Its frustrating but I'm not complaining here. I've been fighting this battle my entire life...
I just feel like I finally am ready to stop and ask someone to do what I want to do. I do what I have to so I can be as healthy as possible now, but I don't want to just manage the here and now. I want to know that someday will be different because today I decided to draw out a map and figure out how to get from point A to point B.
I started a few new medications (yes more) that will eventually help lower the dosage of other medications and *fingers crossed* hopefully make weight loss come a little easier for me. The weight loss should eventually translate into lower medication all around.
I'm feeling hopeful :)
So glad you're being an advocate for yourself and not just trusting your originial doc without getting other opinions! I go to Dr. Zia in Tomball for hypothyroidism... he's an endocrinologist but diabetes is his main thing. I really like him... although, I'm not going to lie, the wait time was a lot longer than the average. If things don't work out with your current doctor, I suggest checking him out. Good luck to you Christen- get it girl ;)
